A Letter in Support of the
Harper’s Magazine Union

For nearly two years, the Harper’s Magazine union has been negotiating a contract. In that time, management has refused to commit to increased salary minimums for even the lowest-paid members of the unit—currently $45,000 a year, well below that of comparable publications—despite the many concessions made by the union. Management’s sole offer to raise wages came with the condition that workers give up their employer-provided health insurance. This proposal is unacceptable.

In the past year alone, the living wage for a single New Yorker, as calculated by MIT and the Living Wage Institute, has increased from $68,338 to $79,469. The stagnant salaries of union members therefore represent an effective year-on-year decrease in compensation.

As contributors, subscribers, and readers of Harper’s, we stand in solidarity with the members of the union in their fight for a fair contract and urge management to commit to meaningfully increasing the magazine’s salary minimums.
